Martine Stig - Noir

Based in Amsterdam, Martine Stig is familiar with the photographic medium as a voyeuristic act. She also researches photography’s role in the perception of reality – how the clichés and tricks of the profession can be used to manipulate the experience of the viewer. ‘Noir’, shot candidly on the streets of Amsterdam between 2014 and 2016, comprises a long string of images akin to cinematic shots. Whether seen close up or from a distance, her subjects seem like protagonists in a film, even while other images offer ‘mise-en-scène’ for the purported narrative found within these pages. Stig’s images are meticulously framed, setting a vaguely unsettling mood and raising questions. Published by Fw: Books (Amsterdam).
