Mark Mingu Cho – 111 Days

Mark Mingu Cho – 111 Days

111 Days is a body of work produced between September 2023 and January 2024 when Mark Mingu Cho was travelling through 11 — predominantly English- speaking — cities across the globe, on a quest to existentially make sense of himself and the world, following a break from his previous immersion in creative practices due to his military service in the South Korean army.

Taken over 111 Days — before, and in the aftermath of the intensification of international strife and upheaval — the works capture texts that were attached or inscribed against built environments, monuments, advertisements, signages, and objects.

Photographed during a time when conflict and division were intensely palpable, some of the texts are the expected inscrutable graffiti and ambiguous commercial signage, but most serve as glimmers of hope and reminders of a universal capacity for solidarity, humour and resilience.

120 pages, 20 x 16 cm, softcover, M.33 (Melbourne).
